Vikings QB1 battle enters camp with Kyler Murray drawing early-favorite buzz

The Minnesota Vikings are bringing an unresolved quarterback competition into training camp. Head coach Kevin O'Connell has continued to describe the battle between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy as a true competition, and no Week 1 starter has been announced. Murray joined Minnesota on a one-year contract after leaving Arizona, while McCarthy returns after going 6-4 in 10 starts during an injury-affected and inconsistent 2025 season. The two quarterbacks shared starting reps during the offseason program and are expected to remain under evaluation throughout camp. Although outside NFL analysis has pointed to Murray as the apparent early favorite, the Vikings have not publicly declared either quarterback the leader.
